So...RedRelay What's Up?
July 1, 2008 11:07AM CST

Alright, alright, ladies and gents. Here's the story on RedRelay. It's really big, and difficult to manage when both Ian and I are on productions. Unfortunately, I don't have the expertise in coding to make this site as kickin' as I want it to be, and I don't have the time or money to make my own dedicated web hosting server. So I must rely on a service host which limits my monthly bandwidth.

Because we are so popular, we get more traffic than our host could give us on the existing plan. Today, I upgraded to the largest package they have- which still may not be enough. Secondly, I don't trust any other host that's less expensive for more and I can't afford a more expensive, more reliable hosting service. Not to mention the nightmare I would encounter moving 60GB of files and usernames, passwords, settings, etc.

So we are getting ready to implement some guidelines to how much can be uploaded and/or exist on someone's account at any given time unless we can get some honest moderation by our users on how much they want to download. I've always asked uploaders to be reasonable with how much they upload and how quickly they do so. On the whole most are good in that department. Others will recieve an email. I want to help this community because I believe in it wholeheartedly, but I have to set something up or RedRelay will go back to being this untamed beast in my life. Someone once said that my generosity would eventually dry up. This really isn't true- unfortunately, I don't have as much time as I did when I started RedRelay. And in a professional sense, that's awesome. I'm getting to do what I wanted to do back then- much thanks to many RedUsers and specifically Ian Bloom, who's understanding is nearly limitless.

So please bear with us once again. We are still the biggest and still the first to do what we are doing on the scale we are doing it. I'm working on it.

Thanks,
Chris
